PROLOGUE

River Yamuna has played an important role in the evolution of Delhi with many cities planned along its banks. Gradually, however, the flow of untreated sewage into the river through storm water outfalls and dumping of industrial waste posed a major health and environmental hazard. The river bank settlements have become prone to floods. Today it flows past silently, with city turning its back towards it.

In order to restore life to the river, Delhi Development Authority has pledged to work towards reviving its ecological value and restoring its flood plains to perform the critical functions of floodwater storage and conveyance, Ensuring Flood Control, curb sedimentation, rejuvenating the riparian systems and Biodiversity Conservation.
