Out of many pleasure gardens built by the Mughals North of Shahjahanabad, the one at Shalimar Bagh is known to have been the most extensive. Sheesh Mahal and the adjacent gardens were used as a Country house by the Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, also the site for his coronation in 1658. The monument along with the gardens was used as summer lodge by the British. Large parts of the garden north to Sheesh Mahal have been lost to city development, and the remaining area has been converted into a park managed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The Sheesh Mahal is under the control of Archaeological Survey of India(ASI).
